But for some people, itching \u2013 known medically as pruritus \u2013 can be a big problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">There are many causes of itchiness, from dry skin to pregnancy to conditions such as eczema. Your skin feels itchy, so you scratch to relieve the itch, but this makes the skin feel irritated and itchy, so you scratch again. There are many things that can start this reaction. However, one of the most common causes is dry skin. Itchy skin can also happen more often if you are pregnant or you have other skin conditions such as eczema and\/or urticaria, \u2013 or suffer a reaction to insect bites and stings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Itchiness over large parts of the body may be due to an underlying medical condition such as kidney, liver or thyroid problems, which accounts for 10-50% of cases of widespread itch. For some people, there\u2019s no obvious cause at all for itchy skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-heading-h4\">Dry skin<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t have enough moisture or oils in your skin, this can lead to dry skin \u2013 and itchiness is one of the most common symptoms. In mild cases, you might have a little bit of itching but in severe cases, the itch can be strong and intense. It\u2019s a particular problem in older people, with around three-quarters of those over 64 years of age having dry skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-heading-h4\">Pregnancy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with all the other symptoms of pregnancy, it might be a surprise to discover that itchiness is an issue for almost one in four pregnant women. It can be so bad that it affects your sleep. There are some specific conditions associated with pregnancy that cause itchy skin. The most common is one called obstetric cholestasis, or jaundice of pregnancy, where there is a disruption in the way the bile flows. This causes bile salts to be deposited in the skin, leading to itchiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another cause of itchy skin is polymorphic eruption of pregnancy, which commonly happens in the last three months of pregnancy and also causes a rash. While we can\u2019t say for sure, it\u2019s thought to happen because the growing baby causes the stomach to become distended, triggering the itch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-heading-h4\">Atopic eczema<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Atopic eczema is a chronic, itchy inflammatory skin condition. If you have eczema, your skin produces less fats and oils than normal skin, which are needed to help trap moisture. Itching is one the key symptoms of eczema. In fact, if you don\u2019t have itchy skin, then it\u2019s probably not eczema. This itch can be more intense during flare-ups, where your skin is worse than usual. This can happen several times a month for some people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it\u2019s a condition that usually starts in childhood, atopic eczema also develops in up to 10% of adults. If you have asthma and\/or hayfever, you\u2019re more likely to have atopic eczema.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-heading-h4\">Contact dermatitis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If our skin touches an allergen or irritant, it can trigger an inflammatory reaction called contact dermatitis. There are two main types. The allergic kind is triggered by an allergen, whereas irritant contact dermatitis is caused by a skin irritant. Itching is the most common symptom, and it can be quite severe. The condition is often linked to certain jobs where you\u2019re more likely to come into contact with allergens or irritants, such as being a hairdresser, nurse, cleaner or barperson. You\u2019re also more likely to get it if you have a family history of asthma, eczema or hayfever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-heading-h4\">Psoriasis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Itchy skin can also be a feature of the inflammatory skin condition psoriasis. In psoriasis, the rate at which our skin cells are renewed happens much faster than normal. The most common type of psoriasis is plaque psoriasis with pink-red patches of skin covered in silver-white scales, which can be itchy. There are times when psoriasis can flare up and your skin is more irritated than usual \u2013 for example after an infection, exposure to intense sunlight or a period of stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-heading-h4\">Insect bites and stings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Insect bites \u2013 from mosquitoes, midges, fleas and bed bugs \u2013 and stings \u2013 from bees and wasps \u2013 can cause an allergic reaction, resulting in itchy, inflamed skin. At least half of us are stung by an insect at least once in our lifetime. Most insect bites clear up within a few hours, but stings can take several days to get better. You\u2019re more likely to be stung or bitten if you do outdoor work or activities or don\u2019t cover up your skin in areas where there are insects, bees, wasps. Having a cat or dog is also a factor as pets may carry fleas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-heading-h4\">Urticaria<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The medical name for what you may know as hives or nettle rash is urticaria. It happens when chemicals, such as histamine, are released in the skin, causing swelling and a very itchy rash. Causes include allergic reactions to food \u2013 like peanuts, shellfish, milk and eggs \u2013 along with insect bites, medicines like penicillin, and latex. Viral infection can also be a trigger, though more commonly in children. Some people find that urticaria is an ongoing problem that can be caused by everyday things like water, heat, cold and sun. Common allergens and irritants include pet dander, house-dust mites, pollen, cosmetics, hair dyes, perfume, plants, medicines and metals such as nickel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How to manage:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-default\">\n<li>If you can, try to avoid the allergen\/irritant<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check the labels of skincare products<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once you\u2019ve been in contact with an allergen, rinse or wash hands with soap as soon as you can or ideally use a soap substitute<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wear gloves to protect your hands from cleansers and detergents<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t dust as this can spread allergens into the air, instead wipe surfaces with a damp cloth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If pollen is the problem, avoid going outside as much as possible when pollen count is high and wear wraparound sunglasses to protect eyes. Then shower or have a bath when you come indoors to get rid of any pollen from your skin and clothes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid drying clothes outside where there is pollen in the air<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If pets make you itch, try and keep them outside or to one part of the house \u2013 and remember to vacuum often and regularly wash bedding and soft furnishings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To prevent insect bites or stings, keep covered with long sleeved clothing and trousers, and avoid strongly perfumed products. Try to avoid wearing sandals or going barefoot outdoors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Antihistamines can help you keep your allergies under control.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-heading-h4\">Cleansers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Soaps and cleansers are detergents that can damage our skin barrier by removing vital water and fats. If you have dry skin, eczema or contact dermatitis, cleansers can irritate your skin \u2013 making your condition worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How to manage:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-default\">\n<li>Use a soap substitute or an emollient to wash<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have quick, lukewarm \u2013 not hot \u2013 baths or showers lasting no more than 10 minutes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid perfumed products<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Opt for cotton-lined gloves when washing up<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Before washing your hands, take off any rings to stop soap collecting underneath<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When washing clothes rinse twice to get rid of any detergent \u2013 or try fabric balls instead.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-heading-h4\">Clothing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Certain fabrics can cause skin itching and irritation. In fact, almost half of people with eczema say clothing is a trigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How to manage:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-default\">\n<li>Wear loose clothing made from natural fabrics, like cotton or linen<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wear cotton socks and gloves<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid wool as your skin can be irritated by its coarse fibres<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Labels and loose threads can irritate skin, so you might find it helpful to remove these.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-heading-h4\">Food<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some foods can cause urticaria and irritant contact dermatitis, making skin itchy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How to manage:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-default\">\n<li>Avoid foods that trigger a reaction as much as possible<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wear cotton-lined gloves and wash with soap substitute before and after preparing food.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-heading-h4\">Stress<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Stress can play havoc with our skin. When we are stressed our body releases substances that can affect our skin barrier \u2013 which can make dry skin, eczema and psoriasis worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How to manage:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-default\">\n<li>Try to relax through deep breathing, yoga, tai chi or meditation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Baking, knitting, writing or painting can help your mind focus on something else<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get a good night\u2019s sleep if you can<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure you exercise regularly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If your stress is getting too much for you to handle, speak with a healthcare professional.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-heading-h4\">Weather and temperature<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Air conditioning, central heating or wood burners, all reduce humidity, which can make your skin dry and itchy. The winter season can also make your skin drier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How to manage:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-default\">\n<li>Keep your house at the ideal temperature of 18\u00b0C<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you want to increase the humidity in your home, use a humidifier or place bowls of water under radiators<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid convection heaters, if you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-karopharma-free-text pt-large pb-large bg-center bg-cover bg-no-repeat  undefined\" style=\"background-image:url()\" id=\"section4\"><div class=\"free-text-wrapper container max-w-small text-left\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-heading-h2\">How to manage itchy skin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many different treatments available that can help relieve itchy skin, depending on what\u2019s causing it and how bad it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-heading-h4\">Emollients<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Itchy skin can be soothed and relieved by using an emollient, the name for moisturisers. In fact, if you have widespread itching, emollients are often recommended as your first-choice treatment, including for relieving pregnancy itch (*). Emollients are also often recommended as a first-choice treatment for atopic eczema, contact dermatitis, dry skin and psoriasis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finding a way to manage the itchy symptom is important. Some emollients contain extra ingredients that specifically act on itchiness. These ingredients include lauromacrogols, which relieve itch through a local anaesthetic action, and crotamiton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emollients should be applied to the skin regularly, sometimes even multiple times a day, however please ensure you always read the label for instructions about the specific product you are using. Applying emollients daily can help irritated skin by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-default\">\n<li>Adding moisture to the skin and trapping it there<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Forming a protective barrier over the skin to keep irritants and allergens out<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Helping flare-ups of conditions, such as eczema.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Avoid regular soaps and cleansers as these can cause dryness and itching; instead wash with an emollient or soap substitute. Note that emollients don\u2019t foam up the same way as soaps do. You can also add some emollients to your bath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-paragraph-small\">(<em>) (<\/em>) With E45 Cream no effects during pregnancy are anticipated, since systemic expsure to white soft paraffin, liquid paraffin and lanolin is negligible. As with all medicines, this product should be used with caution during pregnancy. With E45 Itch Relief Cream there are no specific restrictions concering its use during pregnancy, but it is not to be used on the breasts immediately prior to breast feeding during lacation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-heading-h4\">Steroids<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Mild steroids creams and ointments can be bought from your pharmacy to help relieve contact dermatitis and mild-to-moderate eczema. These help manage flare-ups in atopic eczema by altering the body\u2019s responses to inflammatory reactions. Always check the label for how to use the product correctly; always check who can use the product as many over the counter steroids having limitations regarding age and pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important to know that steroids are applied differently to emollients:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-default\">\n<li>Apply very thinly and to just the affected area<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apply once or twice a day for a maximum of 7 days<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only apply to certain parts of the body and not to the face, eyes, broken or infected skin, genital areas or the bottom<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should speak to your doctor before using a steroid cream.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Always carry on using your emollient alongside your steroid but leave about 20-30 minutes between applying each one. If it\u2019s the first time you have used a steroid cream &#8211; as with any new medicine &#8211; speak to your pharmacist or doctor first to find out if it\u2019s the right choice for you. They will also be able to give you tips on how to apply correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you find that using a mild steroid cream for a week doesn\u2019t bring your eczema under control, see your doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-heading-h4\">Antihistamines<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Antihistamines can be used to help relieve insect bites and stings, pregnancy itch, contact dermatitis and severe itch in atopic eczema. Ask your pharmacist or doctor which antihistamine is best for you, especially during pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-heading-h4\">Speak to your pharmacist if<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-default\">\n<li>Self-care treatment has not worked<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It\u2019s affecting your everyday life<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019re concerned about your symptoms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your itchy skin lasts longer than two weeks or keeps coming back<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This is a new problem for you and you also have a rash, swelling or inflammation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019re itchy all over your body.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-karopharma-free-text pt-large pb-large bg-center bg-cover bg-no-repeat  undefined is-style-secondary\" style=\"background-image:url()\" id=\"section5\"><div class=\"free-text-wrapper container max-w-small text-left\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-heading-h2\">Self-Care for itchy skin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Self-care can include avoiding triggers and using emollients and moisturisers daily for dry skin. In short, if you keep your skin hydrated, this can help keep itching at bay. Mild corticosteroids can be used for a short amount of time to reduce itching and irritation due to insect bites and during eczema and dermatitis flare-ups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-heading-h4\">Do<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-default\">\n<li>Pat or tap your skin instead of scratching<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wear loose, cotton clothing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid known irritants that can cause a flare-up<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use fragrance-free emollients regularly, keeping them in the fridge so you can apply them cold can also help<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hold something cool against skin, like a damp flannel soaked in emollient<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take cool or lukewarm baths or showers no more than once a day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Switch to emollient cleansers or soap substitutes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Try using creams specifically designed for easing itch.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-heading-h4\">Don&#8217;t<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-default\">\n<li>Scratch<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wear clothes made of coarse wool or synthetic fibres<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have long baths or showers, as this can remove protective skin oils<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use perfumed soaps, moisturisers, deodorants or foaming cleansers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eat foods known to cause you allergy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<div
