In this discussion, Dr Sandra Jerkovic Gulin and Dr Sara Ritchie share their clinical insights into why paediatric eczema is on the rise, how to recognise and manage it, and why early, consistent treatment can make all the difference for children and families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-karopharma-accordions\"><div class=\"container\">\n<details class=\"wp-block-karopharma-accordion\"><summary><h2 class=\"accordion-title\">How can you tell eczema apart from dry skin?<\/h2><\/summary><div class=\"accordion-content\">\n<p>Eczema causes inflamed, itchy patches that look and feel very different from ordinary dry skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-default\">\n<li>Eczema: inflamed, red patches that are itchy and clearly different from surrounding skin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dry skin: looks dull or flaky but is usually not inflamed or severely itchy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not all children will grow out of eczema \u2013 the later the onset or the more severe the eczema, the more likely it is to persist into adult life. In fact, it is a chronic condition that requires timely treatment to help manage flare-ups.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-karopharma-accordion\"><summary><h2 class=\"accordion-title\">What types of eczema occur in children?<\/h2><\/summary><div class=\"accordion-content\">\n<p>Children can experience several types of eczema, each with distinct features and causes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-default\">\n<li>Atopic eczema: the most common form, driven by the immune system; often found in skin folds and on the face.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seborrhoeic eczema: greasy, yellowish plaques on the scalp (often called cradle cap) that are not usually itchy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contact eczema (dermatitis): triggered by contact with an irritant or allergen, such as in nappy rash or lip-licking irritation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discoid eczema: round, well-defined itchy patches that look like coins.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follicular eczema: raised bumps around hair follicles, more common in darker skin tones.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-karopharma-accordion\"><summary><h2 class=\"accordion-title\">Why are more children developing eczema?<\/h2><\/summary><div class=\"accordion-content\">\n<p>There is no single clear cause, but several hygiene, environmental and lifestyle factors may contribute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-default\">\n<li>Environment: central heating, dry air and more time indoors can dry out the skin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lifestyle and diet: processed foods and reduced exposure to natural microbes may influence skin health.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pollution and microbiome changes: these may also affect how children\u2019s skin reacts to its environment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Genetics: some children are born with weaker skin barriers, which could be pictured as a \u201cwall with weak mortar\u201d with moisture escaping and allergens entering more easily. Eczema may develop if exposed to the triggers above.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-karopharma-accordion\"><summary><h2 class=\"accordion-title\">Why is it important to treat eczema?<\/h2><\/summary><div class=\"accordion-content\">\n<p>Eczema needs active management to prevent discomfort, infection and disruption to daily life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-default\">\n<li>Untreated eczema leads to itching and scratching, which damages the skin and allows infections to develop.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The condition can disturb sleep for children and parents, leading to fatigue and stress.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Persistent eczema can affect confidence and quality of life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Early and consistent treatment supports healing, improves comfort and helps children live more normally.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-karopharma-accordion\"><summary><h2 class=\"accordion-title\">What are the first steps in treating eczema?<\/h2><\/summary><div class=\"accordion-content\">\n<p>The foundation of eczema management is daily moisturising and gentle skin care using topical treatments applied directly to the skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-default\">\n<li>Apply moisturiser (emollient) after bathing to lock in moisture.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid soaps and fragranced cleansers; sometimes plain water is enough.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose lighter creams for the face or daytime and richer ointments at night.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look for key ingredients that help restore the skin barrier:<br>&#8211; Ceramides and cholesterol to rebuild the skin barrier.<br>&#8211; Petrolatum (soft paraffin) to prevent water loss.<br>&#8211; Glycerin to draw in and retain moisture.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid products containing urea or strong actives on inflamed skin, as these can sting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For inflamed, red or very itchy areas, doctors may prescribe topical corticosteroids to quickly reduce inflammation. Used correctly, these are safe and effective.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-karopharma-accordion\"><summary><h2 class=\"accordion-title\">How can parents make daily care easier?<\/h2><\/summary><div class=\"accordion-content\">\n<p>Simple, consistent routines can make daily eczema care more manageable for families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-default\">\n<li>Build moisturising into existing routines, such as after bathing or before bed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use reward charts or stickers to encourage children to take part.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Try wet wraps to help retain moisture during sleep.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Teach gentle alternatives to scratching, such as pressing or squeezing the skin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use cotton gloves or soft clothing overnight to protect the skin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-karopharma-accordion\"><summary><h2 class=\"accordion-title\">What are some common misconceptions about eczema?<\/h2><\/summary><div class=\"accordion-content\">\n<p>Misunderstandings about treatment and causes can prevent children from receiving proper care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Myth: \u201cSteroid creams are dangerous or thin the skin.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fact:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-default\">\n<li>When used correctly, topical steroids are safe and effective.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They help reduce inflammation and discomfort during flare-ups.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The correct strength and area of application are prescribed by healthcare professionals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Used as directed, they will not always thin the skin or cause harm.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Myth: \u201cFood intake is the cause of eczema.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fact:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-default\">\n<li>Certain foods may worsen symptoms in some severe cases, but they are not the underlying cause.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Myth: \u201cMore cream always means better results.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fact:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-default\">\n<li>Children with eczema need large amounts of emollient to keep skin hydrated, but steroid creams should be used sparingly. Emollients should be used in much larger quantities than steroids\u2014around ten times more moisturiser than potent topical steroid.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Around 250 grams of moisturiser may be needed per week for severe eczema.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Steroid creams should be applied as a thin layer only to affected areas, and always in the correct potency for the body site.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/details>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-karopharma-free-text pt-large pb-large bg-center bg-cover bg-no-repeat  is-style-secondary\"
