Understanding Keratosis Pilaris

An Interview with Dr. Ana Bendito

Keratosis Pilaris, often called “chicken skin”, is a common skin condition that results in small, rough bumps on the arms, thighs and sometimes the face.

In a recent interview, Dr Ana Bendito explains why KP develops and shares straightforward, science-backed tips to restore comfort and keep your skin feeling smooth and healthy.

Why is healthy skin so important?

Skin isn’t just cosmetic—it’s our body’s first line of defence against infections, temperature changes and UV damage. Healthy skin keeps us feeling comfortable and protected every day.

What exactly is Keratosis Pilaris?

KP is a harmless build-up of keratin (the protein that protects our skin) around hair follicles. It looks like tiny goosebumps and can feel rough, but it won’t cause harm.

What can be done to help keep KP at bay?

  1. Gentle chemical exfoliation – Use an AHA-based product (e.g., lactic acid) once or twice a week. This dissolves the keratin plugs without abrasive scrubs that can worsen irritation.
  2. Consistent hydration – Apply a moisturiser twice daily, choosing one with urea (to soften keratin), glycerol (to draw in moisture) and ceramides (to reinforce the skin barrier).

This routine smooths bumps, boosts skin comfort and prevents the cycle of dryness and flakiness.

Which ingredients should you look for in products?

Choosing the right moisturiser is crucial. Look for:

  • AHAs (α-hydroxy acids) such as lactic acid – gentle keratolytic action
  • Urea – breaks down excess keratin and holds moisture
  • Glycerol (glycerin) – attracts water into the skin
  • Ceramides & panthenol – reinforce barrier and soothe
  • Petrolatum – locks in hydration

What skincare myths should we debunk?

  • Natural is always gentler. Coconut or olive oil can irritate sensitive areas.
  • No sunscreen on cloudy days. UV rays  travel through clouds—daily SPF is essential.
  • Oily skin doesn’t need moisturiser. Skipping hydration can trigger more oil production.
  • Expensive equals better. Affordable products can be just as effective.
  • Exfoliate every day. Over-exfoliation harms the skin barrier—stick to 1–2 times a month for normal skin, or up to twice weekly for active KP.

What’s your top tip for anyone struggling with skin issues?

Always seek advice from a trusted healthcare professional before trying new products. Meanwhile, stay hydrated, choose hypoallergenic, fragrance-free moisturisers, and protect your skin with daily SPF.
